Terry McGee MDT Flutes
Business end of a "Grey Larsen Preferred" model in Mopane, with the head withdrawn to reveal the clean appearance of the Minimum Disruption Tenon.
Terry McGee has created an entirely new approach to
the traditional tenon and socket joint of the Irish flute, the McGee Minimum
Disruption Tenon. By lapping the cork on the female (socket) section of
the joint instead of the male (tenon) section, Terry has created a tenon joint
that can be used to tune the flute with minimal disruption to the inner bore of
the flute and, as a result, minimal impact on the intonation and tuning of
the instrument. As a result, one can avoid the considerable expense of a
tuning slide (sterling silver ain't cheap) and still have a tunable
flute.
Another advantage of the MDT is that, when extended, there
is no visible cork (see photo above).
