The Ellis Irish Flute is a Pratten-style flute made from stabilized, hard maple that has been stained a gorgeous reddish-brown that highlights the natural grain of the maple. The stabilization process gives the wood increased density which, when coupled with the hard maple’s natural strength, makes it very similar in feel to a blackwood flute.

It features a fully lined head, nickel silver bore rings, a decorative, turned crown and Geoffrey’s unique innovation: the combination joint/tuning slide. One of the disadvantages of conventional designs is that in order to have a tuning slide, there must be a barrel with a socket at one end for the flute body. This requires more labor to fabricate and creates an additional point of disruption within the bore of the flute. By eliminating the barrel and creating only a single point of irregularity in the bore, the tone is benefited and the overall cost of the flute is kept down.

"I just wanted to let you know that now that I have had some time to get to know my new Ellis flute, I am LOVING it! I'm progressing much, much faster and playing it is a pure joy. It is much more easy to diagnose and troubleshoot embouchure issues with this flute because it just feels much more responsive, for lack of a better word. The sound is wonderful, and I can now HEAR the differences that you discuss between reedy tone vs purer tone, up lipping and down lipping, all of those things that before I just couldn't really seem to produce are now obvious and clear on this flute. Thanks again for all your personal help and time in choosing this wonderful flute for me!"

The slide/joint consists of the nickel silver tenon that extends from the head joint and fits into a Delrin lined socket in the body that is precision fit to accommodate the metal tenon. This allows the player to disassemble the flute for swabbing and storage, but when assembled it becomes a precision tuning slide! Flutes without tuning slides oblige the player to try to tune with the socket and tenon between the head joint and body, creating a large area of displacement within the bore, compromising the tone. The slide/joint design provides absolutely the minimum amount of disruption.

The flute is also fitted with an attractive polished stainless steel foot cap that compensates for the lined head joint and balances the instrument for ease of play.
