Recently cleaned, oiled, repadded and rethreaded here, and in very nice shape considering its age.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA beautiful piece of boxwood, with ivory rings and a single key. The foot ring appears to be a later replacement in an imitation ivory.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe pitch is worth commenting on, since one-key flutes of this shape are sometimes taken for baroque traversos. At A=430 this sits squarely in the classical and early nineteenth century band, where a baroque instrument would be expected at A=415 or below, so this is a simple-system one-key flute rather than a traverso.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe stamp reads SCHUSTER over NEUKIRCHEN. That place name is itself a dating clue: the town in the Saxon Vogtland was renamed Markneukirchen by royal decree from Dresden in 1858, so a flute marked simply NEUKIRCHEN was most likely made before that date. Woodwind making there is documented from the 1770s, and the town's own instrument museum names Schuster among the founding families of the local woodwind trade, alongside Jäger, Jehring, Lederer, Liebel, Otto and Zencker. Production in that period was workshop-based, individual masters working with family successors, rather than the factory output that came later in the century. The pinned cracks are holding really well and the whole instrument seals nicely.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDark-stained boxwood with ivory mounts and a single silver key. The wood is dark through and through, inside and out, though the socket end has rubbed lighter over the years, which is what points to a stain rather than a naturally dark timber. The head joint is unlined and the tone holes are small.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe pitch settles a question worth raising, since flutes of this shape are sometimes taken for baroque traversos. At A=438 to 440 this is a classical-period English flute rather than a baroque instrument; English flutes around 1800 sat near A=437, where a traverso would be expected at A=415 or below. The unlined head points the same way, to construction before Richard Potter's tuning-slide barrel became universal in the 19th century.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe barrel is stamped GOULDING \u0026amp; Co over LONDON. Goulding was one of the great Georgian music houses, founded by George Goulding in the mid-1780s, music sellers to the Prince and Princess of Wales, and trading from New Bond Street between 1804 and 1808. The firm passed through a well-documented series of partnership names, including Goulding, Phipps \u0026amp; D'Almaine from 1798, Goulding, D'Almaine \u0026amp; Potter from around 1810, and Goulding \u0026amp; D'Almaine from 1823. The plain GOULDING \u0026amp; Co mark on this flute, with no partners' names, therefore belongs to the earliest phase of the business, and comparable one-key examples carrying it are catalogued to between 1787 and 1810. Higher F is a pitch you rarely see in these, which is part of what makes it a fun piece.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\"Nach Meyer\" is not a maker's name but a model designation, German for \"after Meyer.\" Heinrich Friedrich Meyer of Hanover built flutes from 1848 into the early 1900s and earned an international reputation for instruments of unusually mellow tone and easy speech. His design was copied widely by German workshops, who stamped their versions \"nach Meyer\" and sold them at a fraction of the price of a genuine Meyer. They were most popular between roughly 1880 and 1920, when they became the most widely imported flute model in the United States. Self-taught, he originally built bombarde and biniou alongside flutes and now concentrates on flutes. He is a serious player himself, taking the Brittany championship in 2010 for coupled biniou and bombarde. His waiting list currently runs 20 months , so finding one secondhand means skipping the queue. There is a crack in the wood of the blowpipe stock, and the bag may be leaking somewhere near the zipper, so a new bag \/ repair should be factored in. Otherwise it shows the normal wear of a set that has been played.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eR. G. Hardie and Co. was founded in 1950 by Robert Gavin Hardie, a championship-winning piper who trained under the Glasgow makers Robert Reid and Piobmor, working out of a garden shed in Bishopbriggs near Glasgow. The firm went on to buy James Robertson's Edinburgh bagpipe works in 1966 and to merge with Peter Henderson Bagpipes in 1973. Hardie pipes enjoyed great popularity through the 1950s, 1960s and early 1970s; his chanters took multiple World Championships in that period, and the firm held a contract to supply the British Army. In practice it plays up to the second octave D; the second octave E, the equivalent of the B on a D flute, is hard to get to speak and we could not coax it out reliably here. Everything below that is a pleasure.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA conversation piece, certainly, but a real performance instrument as well for anyone happy to manage the top of the range.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eReliable Brothers were a California ceramic flute workshop of the 1960s and 70s who published their own instruction book for the instrument, Ceramic Flute, Book No. 1, G Flute, which is why G is the pitch these turn up in. There is a closed Bb key, and the short F works as it should. The long F works slightly different than a simple-system \"Irish\" flute, so to play F natural using it you finger F sharp and hold down the long F key instead of the E. It sounds down to C with the keys.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWhat makes it unusual is the bore. This is the Old System, a name Rudall Carte stamped on the barrel rather than a later nickname, devised by Richard Carte in 1851 to give players who had rejected Boehm's fingering the benefit of his cylindrical bore. The result pairs a cylinder body and tapered head joint with the eight standard English keys and the old fingering. The firm was candid that it was a compromise, noting that with the old fingering retained, the holes cannot all sit in their acoustically \"correct\" positions.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFor a player with smaller hands this is worth a serious look. The finger stretch that makes simple-system Irish flutes hard work for some players is much reduced here, and it is a genuine shame nobody is building this system today.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eRosewood with silver keys. The head joint is a different shape from the one that soon became the firm's standard for this model, and the flute as a whole is lighter in the hands and better looking than the slightly more robust version that arrives with Rudall Carte a little later. It reads as a design still being worked out rather than settled. The name form Rudall, Rose, Carte \u0026amp; Co. was in use between 1852 and 1872, which places the instrument in that window.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe repad was done professionally about fifteen years ago, and the flute has seen little use since. It rewards a light, controlled breath rather than a push, which makes it a lovely instrument for playing at home, for solo playing, or alongside quieter accompaniment like guitar or dulcimer.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTully built to two voicings, the Session, designed to lift its voice in a crowd, and the Soliloquy, designed for soft solo play. This one is unmarked, but the quiet voicing and the very modest air requirement place it as a Soliloquy.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSterling silver throughout, with a wooden fipple block. The workmanship reads rather like a piece of jewelry, though it is very much a player.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt comes with a small clip, shown in the photographs, which works rather like a capo. Turned around and set over the first hole it lets you play in the key of G without cross-fingering the C natural, and when it is not in use it can be parked further down the body, where it happens to sit exactly where the head joint butts up against it at pitch. We have not seen this on another Tully, so it may well have been made for this whistle in particular.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eErik \"Tully\" Tullberg set out around 2000 to design a sterling silver Irish whistle, developing his prototypes in conversation with the whistle community. He stopped taking whistle orders in 2007 and has not resumed, though he returned to instrument making in 2014 and now builds flutes. His whistles surface perhaps once every few years.
