Inspired by the recent development of affordable tin plate, Clarke asked a local blacksmith to help replicate his wooden whistle in the new material. Clarke frequently encountered Irish migrant labourers constructing railways and canals across England, sold his whistles to these workers, and they carried them back home to Ireland, where the inexpensive, easy-to-play tin whistle quickly captured the hearts of the Irish people.
