german-improved-simple-system-flute-with-ivory-head
Antique Blackwood & Ivory 10-Key, D with Case

Note: Due to the ivory head joint, this flute is only available for sale in the US.

A restored German or Eastern European simple system flute with ten keys, an ivory head joint and an African Blackwood body, stamped with a circular trade mark and L.P. for low pitch. It has been improved as well as overhauled, and the result is an instrument that plays better now than it is likely to have played when it was new.

Low pitch flutes of this age usually stop short of A=440, or reach it only with the slide fully home. The bore on this one has been opened up a little and the tone holes fine tuned and opened, which has lifted the pitch just enough that it now sits comfortably at A=440 with the slide out only a few millimeters, and it will go north of 440 if you need it to. The same work has let the flute speak more proudly than it did before.

The Bb has a double touch, which is why flutes built this way are sometimes counted as eleven-key. The keywork all works well, including the low C and C sharp. The very low B is a little stiff to sound, though it is a bonus note that most players never reach for.

This is a smaller-holed flute with real power. From moderate sessions down to small ones it holds its own comfortably, and for the player who prefers a smaller hole it makes a strong case for itself. The projection and intonation also make it a good performance instrument, and the third octave A is an easy note on this one. Most flutes will give you that A if you go after it, but you have to work for it; here it speaks nicely and with relatively little effort. The right hand stretch is a touch longer than usual, worth bearing in mind if you have small hands.

The embouchure is original, and nicely shaped on the edge. For all the work that has gone into the bore and the tone holes, the blowing end of this flute is exactly as it left the maker's bench.

The head joint has been properly repaired. The liner was fully pulled and reglued with epoxy, and the previous crack is now stable and cosmetic. It plays exceptionally well.

Supplied in its original leather-covered case with red plush lining.
