goulding-and-dalmaine-boxwood-clarinet
Goulding and D'Almaine Boxwood Clarinet

A five-keyed simple-system clarinet pitched in C, the early keywork style that predates the modern Boehm system.

Built in five sections of boxwood with ivory ferrules and ivory mounts. The five brass keys have flat, square covers mounted in blocks. Each section is stamped with a crown over "Goulding & Co.," while the bell carries the fuller mark: a crown flanked by foliate garlands over "Goulding & D'Almaine, Soho Square, London." The crown denotes the firm's royal appointment. The Soho Square address together with the Goulding & D'Almaine trade name date the instrument to roughly the 1820s into the early 1830s.

Recently overhauled by Matthew Slauson. In excellent condition for its age; the only notable flaw is a minor chip to one of the tenons, which does not affect playability. Exceptional preservation for a boxwood clarinet approaching two centuries old.

About the Maker

Goulding & D'Almaine was an English firm of music sellers, publishers, and instrument makers based in London.
