howard-whistle-low-d
Howard Whistle Low D

A responsive and characterful example of the classic Howard voice. The tone is quick to speak and carries real volume for a low D, making it a genuinely viable option for session playing. The bottom D is full and resonant, the octave transition is clean and reliable, and the whistle handles dynamics well across both registers without wandering in pitch. This particular example predates the newer Howard head joint variants, giving it the older, more traditional Howard character: direct, immediate, and with the kind of presence that does not get swallowed in a roomful of players. The barrel is thin-wall brass, anodized blue, with a movable ABS fipple head. A reference line is engraved around the barrel to assist with tuning. The two-piece sliding design allows for straightforward pitch adjustment.

About the Maker

First developed in 1974 by master craftsman Brian Howard, the Howard low D whistle is among the longest-established and most respected Irish whistles on the market. Brian Howard perfected the design over 40 years of craftsmanship, working from Kilkenny, Ireland, and later Sheffield, England. The present design has been in continuous production since 1985. David O'Hagan, who served an apprenticeship with Brian Howard in Sheffield, eventually took over the business and has continued refining the design, including developing an improved ABS mouthpiece. Howard whistles are made in Sheffield, a historic home of fine craftsmanship, metalwork, and precision engineering.
