About Jay Ham Flutes

Renowned flute maker Jay Ham draws inspiration from the captivating beauty of 1800s flutes, infusing his creations with the finest design elements to achieve instruments that are as visually stunning as they are melodious.

Presently, Jay offers three distinct models in the key of D, alongside versions in Bb and Eb. In the D key category, options include the large-holed Rudall, the smaller-holed Rudall, and the Pratten, each capable of being outfitted with up to nine keys.

These flute models are Jay's original designs, meticulously crafted to blend historical charm with modern relevance. Through refinements to bores, tone holes, and embouchure cuts, they boast impeccable intonation at A=440 in equal temperament, with particular emphasis on enhancing the first and second octaves and fortifying the lower notes.

Jay's commitment to craftsmanship extends to the forging of keys by hand, a method chosen for its strength and adaptability in tailoring keywork to individual preferences. The foot keywork, developed with a Boehm-style mechanism, stands out for its reliability and ergonomic design, ensuring no compromise in the power of the low D note, a common concern with traditional foot keys.

Among Jay's offerings, the "Rudall" model, characterized by a medium bore and large holes, produces a reedy tone with a robust bottom D and exceptional intonation and responsiveness, making it suitable for both sessions and recording sessions.

The "Wylde," named after Henry Wylde, is a smaller-holed Rudall flute, inspired by Wylde's work for Rudall & Rose. Retaining the tone qualities of the "Rudall" while offering enhanced playability with a more compact hole arrangement, the "Wylde" delivers a warm, expressive tone with reduced finger stretch and air requirements.

Lastly, the "Pratten" model draws inspiration from the Boosey Pratten Perfected flute, boasting a commanding presence, full resonant tone, and ample volume suited for larger sessions. While requiring more air and finger stretch compared to the Rudall models, it embodies the distinctive characteristics that define a Pratten flute.
