This is a rare left-handed 6-key flute made by William Hall & Son of New York in the mid-1800s. Recently restored, the work included pulling and resealing the headjoint lining, repairing cracks in the head and barrel, and replacing all pads and corks. Crafted from stunning Cocuswood with German Silver keys, it features small tone holes and a relatively small bore, offering low breath requirements and precise response for crisp ornamentation.
The flute plays resonantly across the range, with an especially punchy bottom D, and is well-suited to modern pitch (A=440 Hz) with the tuning slide extended about 11mm. This is the first left-handed version of a William Hall & Son flute we’ve encountered, making it an exceptionally rare instrument for both collectors and players.
