Hawkes & Son Blackwood 8-Key, D
Restored by Jon Cornia, this exceptionally clean late 19th-century flute by Hawkes & Son is made from blackwood with German silver keywork and fittings, including silver-capped tenons. It features block-mounted keys and plays comfortably in tune at A=440 with the slide extended approximately 12–15 mm. The flute offers crisp response and even tone across registers.

Hawkes & Son, founded in London in 1865, was a major manufacturer of wind instruments and one of the most prominent names in British band and orchestral supply by the late 19th century. While best known for brass and military band instruments, their woodwind division produced high-quality simple system flutes—often built for military or marching use.
