A traditional Japanese bamboo flute of the ji-ari type, featuring a carefully finished bore - a labor-intensive process in which the interior of the bamboo is smoothed and refined rather than simply cleared of nodes and lacquered. This construction method, considered the premium approach among shakuhachi makers, produces a more refined tonal response.
The shakuhachi tradition traces its roots to the 14th and 15th centuries, and the classical repertoire—particularly the meditative honkyoku pieces—is performed today much as it was five centuries ago. This instrument is pitched in D, the most common key for shakuhachi and well-suited for ensemble playing alongside instruments like the koto.
The shakuhachi occupies a similar musical role to the bass bansuri in Indian classical music: a contemplative, lower-voiced flute central to its meditative and spiritual repertoire.
