This beautifully preserved Cocus & Sterling Rudall & Rose no. 3441, crafted around 1835, underwent a meticulous overhaul by Patrick Olwell, accompanied by an additional Rober Bigio headjoint in African blackwood.
Patrick's skilled craftsmanship focused on refining the flute's performance and intonation as well as providing a comprehensive repad. Remarkably, given its near-mint condition, no crack repairs were necessary. To adjust the pitch of A slightly, a subtle application of shellac was applied to hole 3, a feature appreciated by the previous owner. While this alteration can be reversed for a marginally more open A note, it doesn't impede the flute's resonance.
Unlike many Rudall flutes, which often require adjustment to temper A/B, this instrument maintains perfect pitch at A=440hz, offering harmonious tuning throughout. Its robust bottom D and well-functioning lower C/C# keys enhance its playability.
Included with the flute is an additional headjoint crafted by Robert Bigio, providing the option for a slightly different tonal palette. Both the original and Bigio headjoints deliver exceptional performance, catering to a range of playing preferences.
