A small-holed English eight-key flute in cocuswood, with nickel silver keys and mounts, block mounted keywork, pewter plug foot keys and a metal tuning slide in the barrel. The number four hole measures 7.5mm and the sounding length is about 586mm.
The barrel carries a worn maker's mark ending in AINE above LONDON. The likeliest reading is D'Almaine and Co of Soho Square, who traded under that name in London from 1834 and sold flutes among a wide range of instruments, though the stamp is too faint now to confirm it.
A good candidate for someone who does their own work. Everything is present and the body is sound: the left and right hand sections have no cracks at all, and the earlier pinned repair to the barrel is holding. It needs a full overhaul, with two hairline cracks to seal and attention to the sticking foot keys. Offered as is at a price that reflects the work in front of it.
