Boosey Cocus 8-Key, Eb
This fully keyed cocuswood Eb flute by Boosey has been professionally restored by Owen Doyle and is in clean playing condition. The restoration included stabilization of a hairline crack through the headjoint and slide opposite the embouchure, with the repair remaining stable over several years of use. The instrument plays strongly down through what would be the C-sharp key on a D flute (i.e., the low D note on this Eb flute) and intonates well at A=440 with the tuning slide extended about 15–20 mm.
This Eb features large toneholes similar to those found on Pratten-style flutes, offering strong projection and a broad, assertive tone. While the C natural key (i.e., the lowest key, producing D-flat on this Eb flute) may benefit from adjustment or a new spring, the flute responds well overall with a bright, centered voice and lively feel in the hands.
