Used xiao in great condition, made from curly eucalyptus. The Compact Xiao eliminates the tuning hole matrix and shortens the body of the xiao, eliminating some of the decorative ornaments found on the traditional design. It is an eight-hole instrument with a substantial range. According to Ellis, the Compact Xiao is about 95% equivalent to the traditional xiao in terms of sound and response, with any sonic difference small enough to be easily eclipsed by the convenience and affordability of the compact format. The trade-off is a practical one: you get a shorter, travel-friendly instrument that plays and sounds very close to its full-length counterpart. Includes a fleece bag and hard case.

About the Maker

Geoffrey Ellis has been a respected maker of world flutes since 1997, based in the redwood forest of Northern California. His work spans a wide variety of folk flutes from many cultures, including Irish flutes, Chinese xiao, Indian bansuri, Japanese shakuhachi, and various other rim-blown flutes. Ellis developed his craft independently, through close collaboration with professional musicians and fellow makers over nearly three decades of hands-on practice.
