Designed by Raoul Fajardo, the headjoint aims to bring the traditional wooden flute's sound to modern silver flute players. Fajardo's innovative approach, outlined in his 1977 U.S. patent, includes a separate internal wedge for the taper, simplifying production and enhancing tone quality.
Armstrong's version allows the wedge to rotate and move within the bore, secured by rubber O-rings near the crown. This design facilitates easy manipulation for experimenting with sound and intonation.
