This antique Firth, Hall & Pond Double Flageolet, likely crafted by Hastrick, Bainbridge’s successor, is a fine example of 19th-century woodwind craftsmanship. Stamped with the Firth, Hall & Pond mark and likely imported, this instrument has been fully repadded and restored to playing condition. The double flageolet, originally invented by William Bainbridge in the early 1800s, allows for two melodies or harmonies to be played simultaneously, with its two pipes offering a distinctive musical experience. Once popular during the Victorian era, this rare instrument represents an important chapter in woodwind history.

Here is Darcy Kuronen playing "How Sweet in the Woodlands" from the "The Preceptor or a Key to the Double Flageolet," about 1810, published by Bainbridge and Wood on a Double flageolet made by John Simpson, England (London), about 1830.
