This 13-key Meyer-style German flute, made in Germany around 1880, is pitched at low pitch (L.P. 436Hz) and features a conical bore. The flute has an oil finish and is crafted from grenadilla wood with German silver ferrules and a silver end cap. The headjoint is made of ivory with a German silver crown and ferrule. It is fitted with 13 German silver keys and steel springs.
A responsive flute with excellent intonation throughout. It plays well at A440 with the slide extended just a few millimeters and offers good resonance across the range. While the bottom D is slightly shaded—though not weak—it may not be the first choice for players focused solely on Irish traditional music. However, for those looking for a versatile flute suited to a variety of musical styles and a more uniform playing approach, this instrument performs very well indeed.
Professionally restored in November 2008 by A&D Music, the overhaul included a full cleaning and oiling of the body, removal and buffing of all silver components, and replacement of all pads and corks. The original wooden case is included, lined with green felt, though it is in poor condition with no hinges.
