Tuned to A=432hz rather than the standard A=440, it sits slightly below concert pitch, a choice some players prefer for solo, contemplative, or sound healing contexts.

For lower-keyed flutes such as an E, harder woods are a favored choice among makers because the naturally laid-back tonal character of the register benefits from the bright overtones that denser material helps preserve. Desert ironwood is among the hardest and densest of the Sonoran Desert timbers, and it brings both visual distinction and acoustic clarity to the instrument.
