The Taos Old Style was originally created for Robert Mirabal for a mini-series he was shooting in New Mexico. The design is modeled on old Taos Indian flutes that were traditionally split in half, then glued together with pitch and bound with sinew. Woodsounds replicates this aesthetic in a fully functional instrument, giving the flute a distinctly traditional, organic appearance.

Like all Woodsounds instruments, this is a six-hole, two-piece Native American style flute with a first chamber designed with a moisture reservoir to help manage wet-out, and an ergonomically shaped mouthpiece intended to fit comfortably against the lip. The flute is voiced in a minor pentatonic scale, the most common tuning for the Native American style flute. Reference pitch is A=432hz.

About the Maker

Woodsounds offers wooden flutes created in the traditions of authentic Native American flutes. The maker is Brent Haines, whose background is in engineering. From the first time Haines played the flute, he began researching the details of flute design and applied his engineering experience to computer modeling. He travels different regions in search of the right wood for the right sounds, and it is the beauty of sound that feeds the spirit and inspires his craft; he is known to seek out wood varieties from around the world. Woodsounds flutes are six-hole, solid bore construction instruments voiced with a bright, clear, well-tuned tone and good volume.
