A vintage example of one of the most historically significant whistles in the tradition. The tone is super mellow with a good bit of chiff, that characteristic breathy attack that has defined the Clarke sound for generations. The exact year of this particular whistle is uncertain, but it clearly has some age to it.
The instrument is built to the Original's traditional spec: a tin-plate conical body with a wooden fipple mouthpiece. No case or box included.
About the Maker
Clarke is one of the oldest names in the tradition, first established in England in 1843 by Robert Clarke, a farm labourer who went on to build the company. Inspired by the recent development of affordable tin plate, Clarke asked a local blacksmith to help replicate his wooden whistle in the new material. Clarke frequently encountered Irish migrant labourers constructing railways and canals across England, sold his whistles to these workers, and they carried them back home to Ireland, where the inexpensive, easy-to-play tin whistle quickly captured the hearts of the Irish people. The same company is still in production today, now based in Kent.
