A responsive and unusually efficient low D. The bottom D takes very little air, and so does the rest of the instrument, which rewards a player with fine control over their air rather than one who wants to push. This is an expressive whistle that asks for finesse.
The outer shroud of the head joint slides on this example, letting you position it to cover more or less of the window near the blade. The range of adjustment is small, but it is enough to tune the amount of air and the focus of the tone to taste.
Holes 3 and 6 are offset, so the instrument can be played without piper's grip. Piper's grip remains the more comfortable approach on an instrument this size, but the option is genuinely there.
About the Maker
Domnahl na Gruen Whistlecraft was the work of Daniel McGinley, who built in Knoydart in the Scottish Highlands. He made aluminum whistles in high and low pitches, sold largely direct, and built a quiet reputation among low whistle players for instruments that punched well above their modest price. The workshop is no longer active and these turn up only occasionally.
