Plays at A=440 with the tuning slide out about a quarter inch, with a strong, clear voice across all registers. The tone holes are on the smaller side, which suits players with smaller hands while still giving good tone and projection.

The headjoint and barrel are newly made in beautifully matched cocuswood by Jon Cornia, a tonewood that has become exceptionally difficult to source. The body is cocus as well, with elegant ivory fittings, and the four keys give full chromatic playability.

About the Maker

Edward Riley Sr. (1769 to 1829) was an English-born craftsman who emigrated to New York around 1806 and became a respected flute maker, music publisher and teacher. His workshop at 29 Chatham Street continued under his sons after his death and later became J.F. Gould & Co. Two of his daughters married leading instrument makers, John Firth and William Hall, connecting Riley directly to the firms that would become Firth & Hall and later Firth, Pond & Co.
