The tone is open, strong, and resonant, with notably strong bottom Ds and excellent intonation across the octaves. The flute's tapered head joint bore, rather than a purely cylindrical profile, is the key to its register balance; the taper ensures that the lower and upper octaves track evenly in tune without the compromises often found in simpler cylindrical designs. The boxwood construction contributes warmth and presence to the sound. In pristine condition, purchased new in September 2025 and showing no wear.

About the Maker

Geoffrey Ellis has been a respected maker of world flutes since 1997. He is based in the redwood forest of Northern California, where the quiet and solitude allow him to give his full attention to his craft. His work spans a wide variety of folk flutes from many cultures, including Irish flutes, Chinese Xiao, Indian Bansuri, and Japanese Shakuhachi. Ellis has benefitted greatly from working closely with professional musicians and fellow makers, and his collaborations have resulted in a portfolio of world flutes played by amateur and professional musicians around the globe. The Essential Flute is designed for both Celtic and world music, built in diatonic major tuning and featuring a tapered head bore for improved intonation and projection.
