This Essential Flute in E♭ features energetic tone with excellent intonation. Thoughtfully designed to accommodate thermal fluctuation, the flute tunes approximately 20 cents below target pitch when cold, rising to A=440 once warmed through playing. Geoffrey Ellis has been a respected maker of world flutes since 1997, working from his workshop in the redwood forest of Northern California. The Essential Flute represents Ellis's extensive research and development—a deceptively simple one-piece design with performance characteristics rivaling more expensive instruments. Featuring a cylindrical body with a parabolic head taper (similar to modern silver flutes), this design increases power and projection while balancing tuning between octaves. The Essential plays the diatonic major scale with 2.5 octave range and is suitable for Celtic music, world music, and various musical traditions. Ellis's collaborative approach with professional musicians and fellow makers has resulted in instruments played by amateur and professional flautists worldwide.
