The blowing edge in the mouthpiece is cut really nicely, and this xiao is quite easy to get a sound out of, even for someone who only dabbles. That makes it a good starting instrument for a newcomer to the xiao, and a pleasure for an experienced player too. Beautifully made.
The xiao is an ancient Chinese end-blown flute, played by directing the breath across an edge cut into the capped mouthpiece. It is one of the most versatile open-hole flutes there is, with a range of more than two octaves and a wide variety of scales and modes. This is a full-length instrument, about 750 mm (29.5 in) overall, in jatoba with carved nodes, with seven finger holes on the front and a thumb hole on the back. In excellent, as-new condition, with a red drawstring bag.
