Very accessible and relatively easy to play, with a nicely cut blowing edge that makes getting a sound straightforward. It suits a newcomer to the xiao as well as an experienced player. Beautifully made.

The xiao is an ancient Chinese end-blown flute, played by directing the breath across an edge cut into the capped mouthpiece. It is one of the most versatile open-hole flutes there is, with a range of more than two octaves and a wide variety of scales and modes. This is a full-length instrument, about 832 mm overall, in curly maple with a plain body rather than carved nodes, with seven finger holes on the front and a thumb hole on the back. In excellent, as-new condition, with a soft sleeve.

Geoffrey Ellis has made woodwinds full time since 1997, working on the Northern California coast, and builds flutes from many traditions, including Irish flutes, xiao, bansuri and shakuhachi.
