Really great response, and the whole range is brilliantly strong. The boxwood gives exactly what you would hope for from it: responsive, with a vibrant, light, buttery tone. On a medium to medium-large holed Rudall, the A is often not the most resonant note, but on this one it is wide open. The G is nice and strong, the bottom D is strong too, and the intonation is impeccable. Light in the hands and a lovely flute to play; it gives back what you put into it.
Made by Francois Baubet in 2023, with an unlined head and four keys: Eb, short F, G# and Bb. The bottom ring carries Celtic-style ornamentation. No cracks, all the keys work well, and it comes in a hard case. The wait for a new wooden flute from Baubet now runs up to two years.
About the Maker
Francois Baubet is a self-taught flute maker based in Galway, working mainly for Irish traditional music. His flutes are modelled on 19th-century English instruments, above all Rudall & Rose and Rudall Carte, along with Pratten and Hawkes & Son. They are not exact copies: he keeps and refines the characteristics best suited to traditional playing. He makes one flute at a time, start to finish, alongside a day job.
