Beautiful 8-key Grinter in excellent condition. Recently repadded and ready to play. This is the model made famous by Kevin Crawford and other great players — a wonderful choice for someone seeking a flute that speaks clearly with crisp ornaments and articulation, without sacrificing power. Strong bottom D, and all keys function well down to low C.
This flute also carries a unique bit of history: near the Michael Grinter maker’s mark, you’ll notice a small “B” stamp. For a short time, Michael Grinter used this stamp to signify instruments produced during Benedict Stewart’s growing involvement in the workshop. However, it caused some confusion, as some customers mistakenly thought the "B" indicated the flute was pitched in B rather than D. Because of this, the practice was discontinued — making these “B” stamped flutes very rare. Notably, Mike McGoldrick’s Grinter flute also bears the “B” stamp.
Benedict worked alongside Michael from 1999 to 2009, a pivotal period that included Kevin Crawford’s early adoption of Grinter flutes and the development of the Bb flute and multi-pitched (C/D/Eb) flutes. This flute is a rare and special piece from that remarkable era.
