A beautiful, soft voice, moderate in volume with a nice clean tone. The upper register is the pleasure here: the high A and B are sweet and easy to reach, with none of the strain those notes sometimes take.

The body is a light honey-coloured hardwood in two pieces with a brass tuning slide. The brass ferrules carry engraved Celtic knotwork, which is characteristic of the maker's work.

It comes in a handmade case of figured maple lined with red felt, fitted to the whistle. The case is a fine piece of work on its own.

About the Maker

Hermit Hill Folk Instruments is run by Alex DeWilde, who began making pennywhistles in 2010 and set up the business proper in 2012 in Ithaca, New York, later relocating to southwest Tennessee. He works in domestic and exotic hardwoods, Delrin and brass, and makes fitted hardwood cases alongside the instruments.
