Moderate in volume, and expressive at the bottom of the range in a way that repays careful playing. The bottom D can be spoken quietly or pushed until it gives a bit of edge and growl, and the window between those two colours is narrow enough that navigating it is part of the instrument's character. Intonation is good throughout.

The body is aluminum, light in the hands, and beautifully made. These are not being made any more, which makes them a welcome sight when they do come in.

About the Maker

Ian Lambe worked in Co. Clare, Ireland, making tunable aluminum low whistles that earned a quiet following among players. He is the son of Eugene Lambe of Kinvara, the uilleann pipe and flute maker, and his own expertise in fipple design later contributed to the reconstruction of Bronze Age Irish pipes.
