Response is immediate and confident, intonation is reliable across both octaves, and the volume balance between the lower and upper register is notably even. The whistle is constructed from aluminum with a brushed finish and features fairly large, rounded, evenly spaced tone holes. The windway has low back-pressure and a comfortable feel at the beak. The whistle shows some signs of use but is in good shape and shows no signs of misuse or mistreatment.
About the Maker
Ian Turnbull is the maker behind Impempe Whistles, based in Hilton in the midlands of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. He started the company back in 2003 with a few prototypes. Impempe whistles are hand-made aluminum instruments offered in several keys including D, C, E, and B-flat. Turnbull aimed to create an instrument that drew from both the tin whistle and the Kwela whistle traditions. The company has stated that production is currently paused, with hopes to return with new and improved whistles, though no confirmed timeline has been established. In the meantime, obtaining the whistles is becoming difficult, which makes surviving examples worth seeking out.
