A fantastic player, with the solid, clear tone of the brass Chieftains and that classic "cosmic drain pipe" sound. Intonation and response are both very good. Like the other non-tunable Chieftains, it is set to sit a little flat when cold and comes up to A=440 once warmed.
This is not a whistle for the faint of heart. The body is thick-walled brass with real heft in the hands, so it suits a player who uses piper's grip and is comfortable holding a low whistle with some weight to it. That weight is part of what gives these their solid tone.
These brass Chieftains were known as the Gold whistles. They are no longer made and turn up very rarely. Chieftain whistles are the work of Phil Hardy, whose Kerry Whistles workshop has been building low whistles since 1992.
