Lowden Guitars F-25c East Indian Rosewood & Red Cedar

The 25 sits at the foundation of Lowden's Original Series, built on George Lowden's bracing and a five piece mahogany and rosewood neck, with the trim held back so the tonewoods and the build carry the guitar. Lowden describes the 25 as rich, full bodied, warm, and powerful, and it is the model where that description arrives in its most unadorned form.

The F is the mid-size shape in the range and something of a design classic. Where the larger O opens outward, the F pulls the voice in toward a focused midrange and an articulate attack, which is what makes it as comfortable flatpicking a tune as it is under the fingers. It records cleanly, sits well in a session without crowding, and stays comfortable across a long night on stage. The Venetian cutaway opens up the top of the neck for melodic and lead work.

Red Cedar gives the F its immediacy. The top responds to very little effort and lends a warm, vocal roundness to the mids, which suits the shape's natural focus. East Indian Rosewood underneath adds weight to the bass and a clear, ringing top end, with the harmonic depth and sustain rosewood brings. The result is a guitar with definition between the strings, so chord voicings stay legible rather than blurring together.

The appointments are understated and warm: mahogany binding against the rosewood, maple, rocklite, and mahogany purflings, an ebony fingerboard, and Gotoh 381 tuners finished with ebony buttons.

It ships in a Hiscox hardshell case, made in England and long the case of choice for Lowden. The shell is built for lightweight protection rather than bulk, with a half tonne crush strength, shock absorbing construction, and thermal insulation that buffers the guitar against temperature swings in transit.
