In excellent condition and purchased directly from the maker in 2019 by its original owner, this whistle shows the care of an instrument that has been well looked after. The tone is clear and beautiful, with excellent intonation across both registers, exactly what players have come to expect from Burke.
The body is aluminum with a Delrin-tipped mouthpiece. Burke aluminum whistles feature a Delrin-tipped mouthpiece, which helps prevent condensation build-up in the windway, a common issue with many metal whistles. All Burke whistles also feature a curved windway, which further helps disperse condensation. The narrow bore voice gives the whistle a focused, pure character. The thumb hole provides a C natural on a D whistle, useful for playing in G or other scales requiring a flattened seventh, and also makes an octave C natural available; the extra tone hole is located on the back of the tube between the top two tone holes and is played by sounding a B and lifting the thumb. With the thumb kept in place, the whistle plays exactly as a regular six-holed whistle.
