8-key Potter flute c1800, restored by Rod Cameron. The pewter plugs have been converted to fully functional pads, and the bore has been reworked. A crack on the opposite side of the embouchure hole in the headjoint was also repaired.
The flute was brought back from Edinburgh in the mid-1980s by a previous owner, who had Cathal McConnell play it at a local music store. Intonation is excellent at A440, and while it is not an exceptionally loud Irish session flute, in smaller settings is speaks with a lovely warm yet clear voice.
Before undertaking the restoration, Rod Cameron and David Shorey discussed whether the flute was too much of a museum piece to alter. However, as it had previously been converted from a 6-key to an 8-key design, with two metal-mounted keys in addition to the original block mounts, they decided the work was appropriate.
