Rudall & Rose 8-Key Flute in Cocuswood and Silver, Serial No. 5624 (~1850). Sounding length: 572mm. Stamped (quatrefoil) Rudall & Rose / 38 Southampton St / Strand / London / (quatrefoil) / 5624. Includes original case with matching serial number.
This example is in excellent condition for its age, with no cracks in the headjoint or barrel. The only noted repair is a hairline crack on the underside of the right-hand section. The current owner had it recently inspected by UK based luthier Jon Dodd before consigning here with us.
It plays beautifully at A=440 with the tuning slide extended 11mm. As is common with Rudall-style flutes, the A and B can benefit from slight lipping down. The foot keys function well, and the embouchure and toneholes support a responsive, full sound throughout the range. Hole 4 measures 9.0mm, placing it in the Nicholson-type class per Patrick Olwell’s “Taxonomy of Toneholes.”
A strong, richly voiced Rudall with a powerful bottom D and the complex tonal character these instruments are known for—well suited for Irish traditional music and beyond.
