A bright, efficient whistle with a clear tone and a bright edge that carries well in larger sessions. Volume is strong, and the response is consistent from the bottom D straight through to the second octave, with no weak notes along the way. The second register is easy to reach.

The D+ designation refers to a seventh tone hole positioned at the bell end of the whistle. This hole opens up C natural as a full note or can be half-holed to produce C sharp, extending the instrument's range a note below the standard bottom D. The body is aluminum alloy with Delrin components on the head joint. Delrin is notably resistant to moisture buildup compared to all-metal windways, making this whistle virtually clog-free in extended playing.

About the Maker

Silkstone whistles were made in England by Paul Hayward, who paid tremendous attention to detail. He began making high-quality PVC whistles before expanding into aluminum alloy designs. His whistles are characterized by a clear tone that stops well short of sterile, with a lovely, subtle bite and an energetic response. Hayward was also known for his exceptional ear for intonation, and his alloy instruments in particular are regarded among the finest-tuned whistles ever produced in the tradition. Paul passed away after several years of illness, and his whistles are now rarely found on the market. This D+ model represents some of his most refined work in the alloy format.
