About the Maker

Ralph Gorton Sweet founded the Sweetheart Flute Company in Hazardville, Connecticut, producing wooden flutes, fifes, and whistles. An accomplished fife player and longtime physics and mathematics teacher, Sweet was also a fixture of the New England fife and drum and contra dance traditions, calling dances for nearly seventy years at his converted Powder Mill Barn in Enfield. He lived from 1929 to 2019, and his instruments are still played by fifers and folk musicians around the world.
