Sweetheart flutes were made by Ralph Gordon Sweet Jr., who founded Sweetheart Flute Company in Hazardville, Connecticut. A long-time member of the fife and drum community, physics teacher, and devoted contra dance caller, Sweet brought his diverse background to flutemaking. His instruments are known for their smaller finger holes that still produce nice power and response, making them well-suited for Irish traditional music.
