A wooden Boehm system flute by Wm. S. Haynes of Boston, Model No. 2151, believed to date from around 1912. Boehm system keywork and a wooden body make this an appealing candidate for a classical or orchestral player who wants the warmth of a wood instrument, or for a restorer looking for a worthwhile project.
Offered as is and not currently playable, with a full restoration overhaul in order. There is a hairline crack at the socket side of the headjoint that will need to be sealed. The flute also carries a heavy mold smell and will need to be cleaned and mitigated. The body itself looks to be in good overall condition, as does the foot section.
About the Maker
The Wm. S. Haynes Company was founded in Boston in 1888 by William S. Haynes and his brother George, and is recognized as America's oldest flute manufacturer. The firm built its early reputation on wooden flutes before transitioning to metal; the last of its wood flutes were issued in 1918, apart from special orders, which places this instrument within the company's wooden-flute era. Haynes went on to become renowned for precision craftsmanship and for work in precious metals, including the first American gold flute in 1896.
